DVC Member Lounge at Epcot

https://disneyvacationclub.disney.go.com/25th-anniversary/epcot-members-lounge/

I had a chance to check out the new member lounge in Epcot on my recent trip in June. I was so excited because when I was there in April it was not yet open and I was a little bummed out by this because we were told it was open wen I booked our room. Either way, how cool it is to have a place for DVC member's to chill out and get out of the heat; especially in June when its close to 100 degree's.

Second floor of the ImageWorks merchandise location within the Imagination! Pavilion at Epcot. The hours are 10am until 6pm nightly. You must have your i.d. and your member i.d. as well. I went up to the Cast Member at the podium downstairs and showed him my i.d. and he directed us to the elevator, they also have stairs you could walk up. He pushed the button for us after he advised the Cast Member upstairs we were coming. Once we were off the elevator this is what we seen....

This is the very first thing you see as soon as you get off the elevator. Its pretty and the Cast Members were very nice and they said, "welcome home". I love that phrase and I never get tired of hearing that. We walked around to the left and immediately noticed these beauty's....

The Coke Freestyle machines. There so many flavors. We got our drinks and headed for a seat.

Right next to the Coke Freestyle machines sits these computers stations with printer. Then there is the seating.

Just chilling out in the a/c with our drinks. This is my husband Joe and daughter Jenna. It felt so nice up there. There are plenty of seats and a notebook (computer) on a table for anyone to use and wi-fi through out. There is also a children's play area with video games.

As we were sitting there relaxing a very nice Cast Member came up to us with a cart full of snacks and ask us if we would like one. We each got to choose. I choose gummy bears, Jenna choose a granola bar and Joe choose chips. Here is all the snacks that were in the cart....

That was totally unexpected because they never advertised anything about snacks. I thought that was very nice.
This is what is in the middle of the pavilion....

Its so beautiful up there and can only imagine what it would be like in a rain storm. I asked a CM if they would ever keep it open during Illuminations and she said no and that you couldn't see the fireworks from up there anyways because she tried it and could not, that is very good to know. I am so happy that I as able to enjoy the lounge not once but twice during my June trip. Its so nice to see this space being used again and so beautiful. I hope they keep it open. Thank you for reading:)

HHN 26 Icon Chance - Special effects makeup and we talk all things HHN !

With the fantastically crazy Chance taking over this year’s Halloween Horror Nights ( and being one of my favourite HHN characters OF ALL TIME)
I thought, what better way to celebrate the occasion, than getting dressed up, have my super talented sister apply my makeup, drink a BUNCH of Coronarita and put it on YouTube !

So off we went to Asda (the UK’s answer to Walmart for my American friends) to grab some strange materials like a large men’s t shirt, some tights and a child’s bathing suit.

Armed with my camera, Ashlee’s special effects makeup kit, cocktails and my trusty book The Complete Survivor's Guide to Universal Orlando's Halloween Horror Nights 2016 by Christopher Ripley (which you can find HERE),
we began our night of costume making, makeup applying, Wayne’s World referencing and KISS singing.

You can find part 1 here

and part 2 here

Ashlee has also created other amazing looks such as HHN’s Jack, Twisty the clown, Captain Spaulding and Mystique. Check out the rest of her work Here

If you haven’t already, subscribe to my YouTube channel so you’ll never miss a video

Florida for first timers - mini blog series | Where to stay (part 2) Onsite at Disney & Universal Studios

So last week, we covered International Drive, Kissimmee, Lake Buena Vista and villas. (if you missed it, you can check it out Here)
This week we’re talking all about staying onsite at Disney and Universal. Make yourself a cup of tea and grab some biscuits because this is a long one !

Staying onsite at either resort comes with benefits, many people enjoy what’s called “split stays”
where they may stay offsite for part of their holiday and onsite for the rest to take advantage of these benefits (others enjoy staying onsite at Disney for part of their holiday and Universal for a few days).

So where exactly is “onsite” ? What are the benefits ?

Onsite means within the resort (note: it does not mean in a park) Whilst Universal hotels are all within walking distance of the parks. Most disney Hotels are not.

Let’s start with the Universal Orlando Resort.

To Universal Studios/ Islands of Adventure - 5 -20 minutes (walking) 5 minutes driving
To Disney - 20 minutes
To Seaworld - 10 minutes
To International Drive - 5/ 10 minutes

Universal currently has four onsite hotels, with their fifth hotel (Sapphire Falls opening on July 14th)

Premier Hotels
Loews Portofino Bay hotel
Hard Rock Hotel

Preferred Hotels
Loews Royal Pacific
Sapphire Falls

Prime Value Hotels
Cabana Bay beach Resort.

As you can see from my (super professional) map, all five hotels are in very close proximity to Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure (with Hard Rock Hotel being the closest)
Each of the hotels are in walking distance, but Universal also offer free water taxis as well as a free shuttle from Cabana Bay to the parks.

So what are the benefits ?
Other than the obvious very short distance to the parks, if you stay onsite at any of the Universal hotels, you will gain early entry (1 hour before park opens to the public) to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter.
Bear in mind, the Wizarding world is in both Universal Studios (Diagon Alley) and Islands of Adventure (Hogsmeade). Early entry alternates regularly so it’s definitely worth checking with your hotel which park is offering early entry during your stay.

If you’re staying at Portofino Bay, Hard Rock or Royal Pacific, you’ll receive complimentary express passes which can be used on almost all of the rides and attractions at both parks.

At each of these hotels, you will find express pass machines located near the check in desks. All you need to do, is pop your room key into the machine, smile for your photo and your express pass  will be printed there and then. ( The express pass is valid from the day you check in, until the park closes on the day you check out )

Tip - Many people who decide to spend most of their trip staying offsite (or onsite at Disney) choose to stay for one or two nights onsite at a Universal hotel offering express passes, meaning they will receive their express passes for two or three days at the parks. This ensures that they can get the most out of their few days at Universal.

For a full rundown of the perks and why I love staying onsite at Universal, check out my video below.

If you’d like to know what we (the Dis After Dark team) think of the Universal onsite hotels, check out the Ultimate Universal Resort episode of our podcast Here

So what about Disney? Disney has more than 30...that's right..MORE THAN THIRTY onsite hotels, resorts, lodges and campsites !
The Disney resort is much bigger and the hotels and parks are a lot more spread out. The great news, is that getting to the parks is still super easy ! Disney offer their own mode of transportation - Disney buses ! These buses run between resorts / parks / Disney Springs (we’ll go into this in more detail in or “getting around”  blog).

Each of the onsite Disney hotels -
To a Disney Park - 5-15 minutes
to Universal - 20 - 30 minutes
to International Drive - 20-30 minutes
to SeaWorld - 20 minutes

Here's another super fancy map ...

- Extra magic hours -  Each day, one of the four Disney parks will either open 1 hour earlier or stay open 1 or 2 hours later ONLY for onsite guests. When you check in, you’ll be given an up to date schedule detailing which parks are offering extra magic hours.
It is totally free, all you need to do is show your park ticket and resort ID (room key/magic band)
If you are wanting to plan your extra magic hours in advance, there are plenty of websites that offer crowd calendars and theme park hours.

- Disney Dining plan. - The Disney dining plan can be purchased and is a way of pre paying for your meals. The Dining plan gives you credits for your meals for each day that you stay on property, these are loaded onto your magic band. These consist of table service credits, quick service credits and snack credits. Each time you wish to pay for a meal, you tell your server that you’ll be paying via Disney Dining plan and they will scan your magic band. Easy Peasy.

At various times throughout the year, Disney offer special packages where you will get the Disney Dining plan for free.

We’ll give a full rundown of the Disney Dining Plan in an upcoming blog ! (Important note : DDP can not be used when staying at the Swan or Dolphin hotels)

- The Disney bubble - Imagine being fully immersed in that Disney magic for the entire length of your stay. Experience the same fabulous theming and that Disney “home away from home” feel for every second of your Disney adventure !

-  Free Disney transport and parking - If you’re staying onsite, you can take the Magical Express bus from Orlando International airport to your hotel, you can also take advantage of free disney buses around the entire Disney resort.
If you’re hiring a car, you’ll receive free parking at hotels, parks water parks and Disney Springs.

You can hear all about what we (the dis After Dark team) think about each of the onsite Disney hotels by listening to our Ultimate Disney Resort series podcasts - Here

Are you staying onsite at Disney or Universal this year ? Have you stayed onsite before ? I'd love to hear about your trip or your plans !

Happy planning, Amanda x

My Guide to Walt Disney World's Fast Pass + system

It's me again! That Florida Guy

It's been a while since my last blog which took off with over 400 views! so thank you all.

Now i thought it was about time i scratched my head and thought of another guide blog which would help you all. I was thinking for a while

Then it came to me!

Disney World's FAST PASS + system!!! (FP+)

My first year at Walt Disney World i missed out on so many rides and attractions simply because i knew nothing about the FP+ system.

If you use it correctly you can maximise your time in the park and wait in line for less.
The Best place to start is to explain what FP+ actually is.
Fast Pass+ is Disney's system so you don't have to wait in the "standby line" which is the normal queue. With the new Frozen ever after ride opening last week, the queue was over 300 minutes long!!! Imagine how many things you would miss waiting all that time!!!
You Booked a time to go on the ride before you get to the park, and then you simply turn up to the ride at the time slot, and enter the FP+ line instead of the standby line.
You can even use FP+  shows and character meets also. So if your child wants to meet a certain character which is popular, using FP+ will save time!

Fast Pass+

If you are lucky enough to stay on site at a Walt Disney World property, you have an advantage as you can book your chosen fast passes 60 days in advance before you even get to the park! how cool is that?
Don't worry if you are staying off site though! You can still book fast passes 30 days in advance, which is ample time to catch the best rides!
In one day you can start by fast passing up to 3 rides/shows/character meets. once you use all 3 you can then book another one. once you have used your 4th, you can book a 5th and so on and so on.
Walt Disney World has its own app available on Apple or android devices.
It's called MDE or My Disney Experience. It's such a great app with a host of features including booking dining reservations, park maps, show & parade times, adding members of your party & booking and amending fast passes.

Below is some screen shots of the MDE app. Unfortunately I'm not at 30 days yet so cant show you the fast pass screen but iv included some of what the app can do.

MDE home screen with My plans which, would show had i selected any

Park map view. you can zoom in to your chosen park

Zoomed into magic kingdom, showing wait times for all rides and attractions

Entertainment and times are listed here

Dining, with full menu's and prices and reservations

I could be here all day telling you the In's and outs of the MDE app. It's a great and powerful tool to help with your Disney vacation, but today this is all about fast pass+.

Recommended rides to fast pass

I've added a list of the most popular rides in each park. This is just my Opinion on rides i think would be worth fast passing.

Magic Kingdom

  • Big thunder mountain railroad
  • Buzz lightyear's space ranger spin
  • Haunted mansion
  • Pirates of the Caribbean
  • Seven dwarfs mine train
  • space mountain

Epcot

  • Frozen ever after
  • Mission:space ( orange trip gets more full over green )
  • The sea's with Nemo and friends
  • Soarin'
  • Spaceship earth
  • Test Track

Hollywood Studios

  • The Great Movie Ride
  • Rock 'n' Roller coaster staring aerosmith
  • Star Tours- the adventure continues
  • Toy story Mania
  • The Twilight Zone Tower Of Terror

Animal Kingdom

  • Dinosaur
  • Expedition Everest
  • It's tough to be a bug
  • Kali river rapids
  • Kilimanjaro safari's ( either early morning or late evening when its cooler for the animals to come out)

Others may have different views on this, but if we were all the same we would be boring ey?
This is my selection of most popular rides inside the parks that i would or will be fast passing.

Fast Pass Tier's

Their are two parks inside Walt Disney World which operate a tier system. Meaning you can pick one ride or attraction  from the first tier, and 2 rides or attractions from the second.

The first park is Disney's Hollywood Studios. The Tier's are as follows.

Tier one:

  • Toy Story Midway Mania
  • Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster
  • Fantasmic!
  • Beauty and the Beast – Live on Stage
  • The Great Movie Ride

Tier Two:

  • Tower of Terror*
  • Star Tours*
  • Voyage of the Little Mermaid*
  • For the First Time in Forever: A "Frozen" Sing-Along Celebration*
  • MuppetVision 3D
  • Disney Junior – Live on Stage
  • Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular!

The second park with the tier system is Disney's Epcot. The tier's are as follows.

Tier One:

  • Soarin’
  • Test Track
  • Frozen Ever After
  • IllumiNations: Reflections of Earth
  • Living with the Land

Tier Two:

  • Turtle Talk with Crush
  • Spaceship Earth
  • Character Spot
  • Disney & Pixar Short Film Festival
  • Journey into Imagination with Figment
  • The Seas with Nemo & Friends
  • Mission: Space

Timing of Fast Passes

Now you might think this all sounds great and are now eager to book your fast passes, but one thing you should take into account is timing.
You don't get punished if you miss your fast pass, but i can tell you now if you've booked it you wont want to miss it. Make sure you leave enough time to get to each fast pass as they could be at opposite ends of the park! These parks are not small, for example just one part of Epcot (the world showcase) from end to end is around 1.2 miles long, so make sure you stay hydrated.

Booking fast passes

Booking Fast Passes has never been easier with the MDE app, or even the MDE website!
Disney has recently changed the system In earlier days you would have to choose 3 and sometimes it didn't give you the options you wanted.
Now the new system lets you book 1 2 or 3 fast passes and once they have been used you can book a 4th like i mentioned earlier in this blog.

I hope this has been useful and not to long winded, iv tried to keep is as short as i can whilst giving you the important stuff. Of course i'v missed things and for more information you can go to the MDE website or app.
